Third-grade student brings gun to school in Okemah

The Okemah School District reports that a third-grader brought a gun to school in their backpack.

The district said they received a report that the child had a gun, their backpack was searched and a gun was located.

The police were called and took possession of the gun and the student.

The district said appropriate action is being taken against the student.

At this time, the school said no students or staff were in any danger.

Okemah Public Schools in their press release stated:

The District wishes to thank the individual who reported the gun and law enforcement for their swift response. Parents, please remember to check your student’s backpacks regularly and please discuss with your students the importance of reporting anything that seems suspicious. The District cannot comment further because of privacy laws.
