Man arrested after deputies find 20 malnourished dogs and 14 dead at a home

The McIntosh County Sheriff's Office said a man is now in jail after they were notified of a possible case of animal neglect.

Deputies said they received at a report that numerous dogs were starving and one was dead and chained to a tree at a home in Rentiesville, Okla. on Oct. 8.

Deputies went to the home with a search warrant and found 20 dogs that were malnourished and had no food or little access to water or shelter. They also found 14 deceased canines that were laying around the property and several were still tied to trees and in dog houses.

With the request for assistance from Veterinarian BK Glover, he told deputies that all living canines on the property were malnourished and all appeared to be in various stages of starvation.

Deputies arrested Fred Burkhalter, 46, in which they made contact with on the property in the front yard.

Burkhalter was arrested on complaints of obstructing an officer in the performance of duties and cruelty to animals.

Deputies said as a result of these observations, all 20 living canines were collected by Checotah Animal Rescue to be treated and held pending further instruction from law enforcement.
